A new year, new courses
We kicked off the New Year with a weekend lino cutting course led by our master printmaker, Babs Pease, who specialises in relief printmaking and really knows her stuff.
Linocut is a printmaking technique that’s a bit like woodcut—you use a sheet of linoleum, sometimes mounted on wood, as your surface. You carve your design into it using sharp tools, leaving the raised bits to make the print. Once you’ve rolled on the ink, you press it onto paper, either by hand (a wooden spoon does the trick!) or with a relief press.
Babs is a Scottish artist who’s made a name for herself with her detailed linocut prints and paintings. She gets her inspiration from the local landscape, plants, and animals, and her work is all about capturing the character and movement of the animals she loves. After studying Fine Art in Edinburgh, Babs took a break to raise her four kids, but she’s back full-time printing and is a long-time member of the Dunfermline Printmakers Workshop. Every linocut she makes is hand-carved and printed using an antique Victorian press.
Our classes are nice and small—just six people—so everyone gets plenty of personal attention. Whether you’re brand new or already feel comfortable with the tools, you’ll fit right in. When you sign up, there’s a quick questionnaire about your printmaking experience, just so we know where you’re starting from.

No matter your experience level, you’ll receive an in-depth walk-through of the process and a tour of the workshop—the presses, inks, papers, and layout area—so you get a feel for what’s involved. You’re supported throughout, and encouraged to make the most of your time, chat with other artists, and enjoy being creative in a friendly space. By the end of the day you’ll come away with your own original prints and a real sense of achievement.
